England international Mouritz Botha becomes Foundation Ambassador
Blues Foundation are delighted to announce that former England rugby international Mouritz Botha has agreed to become the latest ambassador of the charity.
Born in South Africa, Botha originally came to Bedford in the early 2000s to play for Bedford Athletic before signing for three seasons at the Blues between 2006-2009 and settling in the area with his now wife, Natasha and their two children, Joshua and Theodore.
On joining Blues Foundation as an ambassador, Botha said: “I’m delighted to help represent this new charity which shares many values and aims close to mine. I’m also very passionate about the area and helping young people through rugby.
”Bedford has been very good to me at all levels of rugby and life, so to give something back to a start-up charity that aims to inspire our community and improve people’s lives is something I am looking forward to supporting.”
Botha made 73 appearances and scored 10 tries for the Blues, before moving to Saracens and forging an incredible legacy for himself, including helping the club win their first ever Premiership title in 2011.
His performances in that title winning season earnt him a call up to the England squad that same year, which he qualifies for on residency grounds. Botha made 10 appearances for the national side including featuring in every game of the 2012 Six Nations.
After leaving Allianz Park, Botha spent a season at South African Super Rugby side The Sharks, before returning to England to play the remainder of his career at Newcastle Falcons. He has since held various coaching roles with Germany and most recently Ampthill, but is now working at Bedford School.
Living in Stevington, Botha continues to be actively involved in local sport, including playing cricket for local side Sharnbrook & Bromham CC.
The role of an ambassador is to help Blues Foundation towards the overall ambition of becoming one of Bedfordshire’s leading sports charities.
